Overview: In order to appreciate the beauty and social commentary embedded in The Great Gatsby, we need to understand the culture of the 1920’s. In your groups, you are going to research an aspect of this time period and present your findings in an oral presentation for the class. You will be given two class periods to research in the library and two class periods in the room to organize and prepare your presentation.

TOPICS: Women in the 1920’s
The Gold Coast (Then and Now)
F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda Sayre
Prohibition
Music and Dance in the 1920’s
Art in the 1920’s

Requirements:
Your group presentation should be approximately 10 minutes long
Your discussion must be informative and touch upon the most important details of your topic. If your topic seems too broad, your group should decide upon a more specific focus for your presentation. Remember, we are trying to illustrate how these topics/events reflect the culture and social life during this time period.
When you present your topic to the class, each member of your group must address the class in some way. (Think about how you might divide up the work to ensure that everyone plays an equal role. This might include dividing up the actual research, note taking, artwork, and speaking responsibilities.)
You must have some sort of audio/visual aspect of your presentation. This can take the form of posters, handouts, musical selections, photographs, video clips, PowerPoint, etc. Just keep in mind the time frame as you prepare your presentation.
Your research must come from at least three different sources. One should be from a print source, and one must be from one of the library’s databases. BEWARE OF SHADY INTERNET SOURCES!

Time Frame
Friday 9/18 and Monday 9/21 – Library Work Sessions
Tuesday 9/22 and Wednesday 9/23 – In-Class Work Sessions
Thursday 9/24– Begin Presentations!

** If a group member is absent on the day of the presentation, THE GROUP WILL STILL PRESENT! The missing student will have to present his/her portion of the presentation in writing!

Grading:
Group Grade: You will receive a major class work grade for this research presentation. In determining your grade, I will consider the following qualities:
Quality of Information 40 points
Quality of Audio/Visual 30 points
Oral Presentation Skills 15 points
clarity, projection, eye contact, organization, etc…
Work Cited Page (MLA) 15 points

Individual Response Grade: You will write a response log (1-2 typed pages) as a result of these presentations. You should write a short summary of what you learned from your own group’s presentation and research. Then, you should use your notes to summarize what you learned from the other groups’ presentations.
THIS WILL BE COLLECTED ON FRIDAY 9/25 and will count as a writing grade.

Mr. Boltrek- Focus 11 Enviro. Chem.- Semester Project

Environmental Chemistry- Semester Project

Directions: Over the next two quarters you will be required to conduct two research projects; one per quarter, and each of a different topic and presentation format. The option is yours in terms of topics and order in which you perform either a five minute in-class presentation on your topic discussing your research using visual aids which will be handed in; or a five page research paper in which you examine a specific topic. One topic must, however, be developed into a presentation for one quarter, and the other will be written out into a five page paper at the end of the other term. For example, if you choose to write a paper for the first quarter, the second quarter project must consist of a presentation using visual aids which can be handed in for grading, and vice versa; all the while keeping in mind that they must be two different topics. In your projects you will research and discuss your topics’ causes, current effects, and probable impact on the future. For both projects, you must include a bibliography of all sources, both cited in your paper and those which you examined but chose to discard. The paper must be written on an individual basis; however, the presentation may be with a single partner (Be wise in choosing your partner!). You will receive a great deal of in-class instruction and research time to complete the project. Taking advantage of these opportunities should provide you with minimal take home work. Please do the best you can, as this will count as two test grades in your Environmental Chemistry average in each quarter. The first quarter project is due on Thursday, November 12th, and the second quarter project is to be turned in no later than Thursday, January 28th.

Options: The following is a list of project options for you to research. You are by no means relegated to these options; feel free to create your own area of research. All topics, however, must be approved by Mr. Boltrek prior to beginning your work. This will be ensured by you choosing a topic, possible partner, and evaluating your project responsibilities and choices with your parents/guardians prior to them signing the attached sheet acknowledging the gravity of the assignment. Please return only the second half of the page, including the requested signatures, by Tuesday, September 15th. A similar statement of acknowledgement will be sent home in the beginning of the second quarter. Suggested topics are as follows:

-Deforestation
-Impacts that lobbying by big business has on government policy with regard to the environment
-Cleaner/”greener”/more efficient alternatives
-Forecasting the future both with and without actions being taken to combat global warming
-Current visible impacts of climate change
-Overfishing
-Toxic waste dumping
-Oil spills
-Offshore drilling
-Nuclear power
-Polar bears
-Arctic ice caps
-Glacier recession
-Endangered species

I hereby acknowledge that I have read through the project description with my student and we both fully understand what is expected of him/her throughout this process. I have been made aware of my child’s project choice and any possible partner with whom he or she may work.
